Artistically I made to the leap to digital last year around this time. After a lifetime being a staunch traditionalist, I finally relented and found myself biking to J&R one cold morning last January to buy a Wacom tablet. It was a smart move. The second piece I ever produced, the Conan head for Royal Flush (Leno head was the first), got an honorable mention for best pro illustration by the kind folks over at Creative Quarterly 21. Going digital has given me more freedom and speed. I will always do certain projects traditionally but developing my digital skill sets was a necessary step as an artist in the year 2010 and beyond.
I have a bunch of new work I'll be posting soon including a 5 portraits for HOW magazine, an updated Misfits piece set in a spooky graveyard full of enthused skeletons a triptych of Bridgette Bardot, two illustrations for my wife Daria's hilarious blog, plus portraits of NOVA science scions Neil Degrasse Tyson and Michio Kaku, The Harlem Children Foundation founder Geoffrey Canada, Patsy Cline, Eisenhower and a whole slew of other fun work involving tea-drinking Japanese snow monkeys and inhabitants of Hoth.
Whereas 2010 was spent acclimating myself to a new medium, 2011 will be about full throttle production. I will continue to work on editorials and portraiture but my main plan for 2011 is to step up my efforts in the comic/fantasy/children's book realm. I have many projects I have been meaning to get around to and this year I will do so, but one project looms foremost in my mind ... a comic strip starring Dr. Broccoli! Daria and I will begin chronicling his exploits very soon. Here's a taste of what is to come.
The plan is to do a series of twelve 4 panel strips, along with a couple 1 panels, plus pinups, maps, and whatever else comes to mind. Look for some strips in February. Thanks for stopping by, have a good one!
